It's Not Okay Google - Mass Protest Walkout by Google Employees
The Android mobile software creator for Google, Andy Rubin, left the company in 2014 after an investigation into an allegation of an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate proved to be credible. Details about the exit are included in a report on October 25, 2018 by The New York Times which says that Google paid Rubin a $90 million exit package. This was "Not Okay" with employees of Google and they staged a multi-nation walkout on November 1, 2018. The walkout was in protest to Google’s handling of Andy Rubin’s exit package as well as over 45 additional sexual harassment claims over the years.
Beyond the Walkout
The failings of leadership by Google and Alphabet (Google’s parent company) can be witnessed well outside the controversy over its handling of sexual misconduct and gender discrimination issues. It would be bad enough if this were the only issue that Larry Page and company had handled poorly lately. But it's not. From a significant security breach, to the company's efforts to develop a censored search engine in China all while snubbing AI technology assistance for the US military, Google's top brass has been bungling issue after issue in recent months.
In my opinion, Alphabet needs to remember their roots in building their enterprise as a U.S. Company. New leadership at the company is not likely to happen because Larry Page's shares give him prominent voting rights. He has almost no accountability to shareholders or anyone else. Lucky for him, there's almost no way to force him out without his consent. That being said, we're likely stuck with Mr. Page for the near future. That is not good news for the company and investors. Because Google and Alphabet are so large and so influential, it's also bad news for the rest of us in the United States.
